Derrick- Who is the picture of featuring the lawnmower. Pretty sure that is you with the mower, and it looks like an older version of Curt, but who is the other person? Is this some final version of the pups before it all went south? What year is this from? Thanks

The other guy is the photographer’s assistant. Curt refused to pose for the lighting tests.

Thanks Derrick. So that is Cris, huh? Man, I swear if I didn’t know any better I would think those guys were brothers. Have to admit that does look like Curt on the Snow cover.

1. Unrelated to the above-I use to own a copy of the 20th anniversary edition of SPIN magazine, and it quoted Curt from some other magazine from ’82 or ’83 that went something like, “We don’t have to get to get drunk or do drugs to make music; we get messed up just on our own minds. Together we’ll rake your brains over the coals.” Was there a brief period before the recording of the 2nd album where you guys tried giving up drugs altogether? I thought you guys gave up the acid dropping after that album.
2. What happened to the pics from the previous incarnation of this site? I remember seeing a picture of Curt cringing to the sound quality of a live show, and a picture of Cris making a wierd face subtitled, “Who threw that shoe?!”

Ian, just a heads up on that article. I remember that quote exactly. It was from an 86 issue of Spin, and when they are referring to not having to take drugs etc, and don’t have to act like fuck ups- mentioning they just naturally are- this is all in reference to bagging on the Replacements. Then again, Curt tells the interviewer he has a monorail in his backyard, and that children are fruits, grown on trees and meant to be peeled and eaten. Funny stuff. So I am assuming they were still quite on drugs. It was by this lady who wrote at the magazine. I want to say it was Sue Cummings, but I am sure I am wrong. Great writer back when Spin was actually somewhat cool. Maybe Derrick will be nice enough to post this interview sometime.

1. The Meat Puppets were, are, and always have been straight edge.
2. Yes, it was Sue Cummings
3. Yes, those photos are curently not on this site. Which isn’t to say that they won’t reappear. What can you do: the minute you remove content that’s been up for a decade and try to rotate in something new, people panic.

Last week I was surfing around a bit, and was pleasantly surprised to find that the old Meatpuppets.com webpage is archived here:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010623193739/www.meatpuppets.com/archive.htm
The archive.org site is also known as the “The Way Back Machine”, and it is chock-full of internet nostalgia.
Evidently, the “Archive” link from the old site has been archived, if you will forgive the apparent double-speak. Those pics Ian remembers are on there, under the “Tour Diary Bonus: Extra Photos” link.

That first photo of Cris is Meat Puppets…sweaty, possessed…like some alien gopher poking up from the terrain of a barren planet ready for war…like a living embodiment of one of his drawings.

You all must definitely be straight edge – forty somethings who remember shit from 20 years ago…

derrick do you have any more photos of the band onstage with cool art visuals like the forbidden places live shot (above). or how the stage was setup during ‘backwater’ and ‘never to be found’ on the live dvd??
ps- is there a way we can contact the people who shot the movies used in the DVD and get the other rare songs that must have been on the same original reels???
youre the man keep up the good work.

We don’t own the rights to any of our Polygram albums, and aren’t likely to acquire them any time soon. As evinced by our inability to get them to let us license any Polygram tracks for the “Classic Puppets” compilation, I’m guessing that relationship will languish until someone over there gets the urge. I’m sure it will happen one day, but not in the immediate future.

Peter -
I have no idea where this was taken. It looks like it’s from 1988-ish, judging from the outfits.

When did the Meat Puppets play at the Kennal club?
I don’t think that’s the Kennel club, btw. Never had exposed wall studs, as I recall.

Looking at some of the photos of Meat Puppets’(I’m unsure of whether my apostrophe should indicate that each of you is a “meat puppet” or that “The Meat Puppets” is considered an integral body) gigs makes me sad. It sucks being born a decade and a half too late.

Derrick-
I grew up here in the valley and in a drunken stouper after a Meat Puppets release got the dang bands name tattoo’d on my back! Now at on the cusp of 40 I have a hard time explaining it to people. I showed you guys it after a show in SLC backstage. We ate chicken wings together and goofed around.
The New Years even shows at the Sun Club in Tempe are memories to last a lifetime. 2 inches of liquor on the ground and music blaring until the wee hours of the morning.

Jeff – Pup’s played the Kennel Club I’d say in 1988…it was before the earthquake because I was still living in an apartment that was subsequently rendered uninhabitable. But I was at that show, and I most definitely see myself in the photo

I was a big fan through the puppets first 3 albums. Fell away until Forbidden Places. To me a classic rock Album. Saw you guys in Portland the same night the Blazers beat the Suns in one of the best of 7 in the playoffs in pheonix. What a show! you guys took it out on us. I can’t recall but it was back when Portland had Clyde the Glyde

Hey lets do a remix compilation.
Different compression / gate stuff with the latest processors on the ol’ control grid
Remicing technics would sound great with drums,
could have guest mixes, sounds like a party.
with crazy automation.
Hey Check it Out

I just found this site through a link posted on metafilter yesterday.
We were pen pals WAY back in 1983 or 84.
Here is one more photo from the East side Club in Philly…

Hey Derrick, just found your blog here… great stuff. I was a fan of you guys since way back in the Keats Rides A Harley days.. I was in two bands on that too, S-Squad and Earwigs. I’m the drummer. We came to see you at Cathay de Grande right about then cause we were so blown away by your track on Keats. Good times!

Okay, so this response to a comment above is three years later. But since I work at World Cafe Live and since you guys are coming through again soon, I thought I should check out your site. The toast isn’t burnt and it’s not meat. Kurt is showing off his scrambled eggs to the camera. My camera. Sorry the hand tinting hasn’t held up through the years.
