UPDATED – After posting my incomplete version of the January 16, 1986 “SNAP!” show, I got a couple of emails from fans offering to send me a complete copy. Props go out to Algophana and Craig Bayer for their assistance. A quick review of Craig’s CD revealed it to be about as good as mine, fidelity-wise, so I ripped it and cleaned it up as best I could. I’ve replaced the old zip file with a fresh one. I’ll save the filler live tracks for another time.

This recording was our first appearance on Deirdre O’Donoghue’s “SNAP!” radio program. We were about two months away from recording “Out My Way,” so the tracks from that album are still in infancy. You can tell we’re not quite comfortable with those songs: I haven’t settled into a groove on some of them yet, and Curt’s still getting his lyrics together. It was a little tricky getting loose for the session. We wore headphones, I was in an isolation booth, and there was small group of people sitting around on the floor, staring up at us. The first couple of tracks are a little stiff, but it’s a good performance for the most part despite the odd cringe-worthy moment.

This rip is taken from an old casette, and the sound quality reflects it.I’ve tried to clean the sound up as best as I could, but it’s not close to priseen. The tracks are all in one big zip file, about 90 megs.

Woow more Meat puppets live :D :D jipppi :D

    Derrick ~

I have a boot recording of the first Meat Puppets SNAP performance, and the date is listed as January 16th, 1985 (21 years to the day). Is this another stop about a year later?

Or, do I have the wrong date?

Primordial “Out My Way” tracks would indicate January of ‘86 more likely, I wager.

    Gracias

This show is definitely from twenty years ago today (eerie unintentional Beatle reference duly noted). We visited “SNAP!” twice in 1988, but this was our first one. We did another show at KCRW in the early 90s, but it was not with Deirdre.

That’s a really nice recording. This is the first one i get from this era.
    Ben

Just out of curiosity, did the interview segment get taped too and is there a chance it might get posed?

I’m pretty sure I have the interview somewhere. I’ll see if I can find it.

Wooo Jan 16th! My Birthday! still recorded years before i was born… grrrr… anyways thanks derrick

A really nice show! Brought back some memories of why I first began listening to Meat Puppets

hey derrick again- on another note, i have a killer show of meat puppets in austin texas at liberty lunch. real good sound (except for buzzing in background) and an exceptionally jammy, aggressive show. i think it was huevos tour, i can send that your way if you dont have it, though you probably do, it is the best meat puppets show in my opinion of all the live stuff i have heard. take it easy. bissell

hey derric gracias por poner los recitales estan muy buenos, te pasaste

    alan

Is there anyway you can burn this to a cd?? This is awesome and would like to listen to it in the car.. Don’t know if I’m suppose to be able to burn it or not. I have tried everything and can’t get nothing to work!

iTunes will let you burn audio CDs from MP3s. It’s free at apple.com

Thanks for this Derrick, great set. I’m a massive fan of the really early Puppets stuff so was delighted with the June 81 show over at the Live Depository and reissue of the first album with all the extra tracks. Is there anything else in the vaults from this era?
    Cheers, Jim.

Actually, a show from Fall of 1980 is the next one in the que. Look for it soon.

I just want to say it’s great!

Excellent, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for that one. Keep up the good work!

Ahh tweeet tweeettt….The 3 MPs are whistling!***Git on down!****

i love that u guys don’t care about the money and just let us download your stuff is amazing. though i do still buy ur guys cd so i can get the full studio version of the song. LOVE YA

    Hi Derrick,

Correct me if I’m wrong but did you guys return to SNAP in ’88 and do some more recordings. I found some MP3s (I can’t remember where exactly) of stuff from Monsters (Light and In Love). Any chance the entire set is floating around somewhere?

By the way its absolutely thrilling for me to read your thoughts about the band and other tidbits from its history. I’m a huge fan.

    Thanks!

    Ross in California

Actually, we returned to SNAP two more times. And we did another KCRW show after SNAP was gone. If you want a taste, you can check out the version of “Meltdown” on “Calssic Puppets.” It’s from the third show. (Or the second, I forget which.)

Hey Derrick, do you remember if “other kinds of love” was performed live more often? I’d love to hear more live versions of that beautiful song

I can’t recall ever playing it onstage. It wasn’t a song we could pull off live.

Well, turns out that you actually played that song. Check out dimeadozen! =)

I know we played it, especially leading up and and directly after recording it. We didn’t play it much after 1986, and we didn’t play much in 1986.

One of my favorite ppups songs was “He’ll have to go” by Jim Reeves. I think it was on KCRW. I had it on a cassette until someone spilled a big gulp on it. Is it somewhere to be found? Cheers!

    oh there it is! THanks!

Something to say?
